Requirements
The applicant must be at least 19 years of age to serve students in prekindergarten through grade 12.
Beginning January 1, 2023, you may qualify for the ELS-Paraprofessional license by meeting the requirements outlined below at age 18 and may serve in prekindergarten through grade 8 only.
One of the following required:
- Associate’s degree or higher
- 60 semester hours of coursework
- Coursework must be at the 100-level or higher from a regionally accredited college or university
- High School Diploma or GED and a score of 460 or higher on the ETS Parapro Assessment
High School Diploma or GED and the following scores on the ACT WorkKeys:
- Applied Mathematics/Applied Math (with a score of 4)
- Reading for Information/Workplace Documents (with a score of 4)
Additional Information
- Paraprofessional licenses are valid for 5 years and may be renewed with the payment of registration fees.
Frequently asked questions:
A: If you hold a valid professional educator license, educator license with stipulations or substitute license, you are qualified to be a paraprofessional. You do not need to hold a separate paraprofessional license.
A: Paraprofessionals must work under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher Paraprofessionals may not provide independent instruction.
A: Paraprofessionals who hold bachelor’s degrees may work as substitute teachers. Paraprofessionals who do not hold bachelor’s degrees may substitute for other paraprofessionals only.
A: Employment is handled by individual districts; applications can be found on their district website.
